Storm Hunter Weather is a professional, user-friendly app developed in collaboration with former KCCI-TV meteorologist, John McLaughlin. With its simplified display of advanced radar data and Safety Net alerting system, Storm Hunter provides users with the ability to monitor multiple locations and set personalized thresholds.
John McLaughlin is known for pioneering the use of Doppler radar for severe storm tracking on Iowa television. In fact, he worked with Bob Baron of Baron Weather to develop and install the nation's first High Definition Doppler radar (VHDD) back in 1995.
One of the standout features of Storm Hunter is the option to receive notifications as storms begin to produce lightning, hail, or rotation. This allows users to be alerted even before official warnings are issued. Additionally, up to eight locations can be specified, ensuring that loved ones are informed when dangerous weather approaches.
Storm Hunter includes five high-resolution NWS radars covering Iowa. Users can select from radar intensity and velocity, along with access to the "Baron Button" for one-click threat delineation. This feature breaks down storm cells into rain, hail, and wind threats.
The Future Scan product offered by Storm Hunter extrapolates storm cells from their current radar locations out to one hour, including predicted decay or growth. This provides valuable insights into how the weather will evolve in the near future.
In terms of national coverage, Storm Hunter offers detailed radar data across the United States. Additionally, the "U.S. Severe Wind" product displays areas of significant wind shear as detected by the network of National Weather Service Doppler Radars. This tool is particularly useful for identifying rotation and damaging wind areas quickly and accurately.
The app also allows users to save multiple locations for specific computer-generated weather forecasts based on national prediction models. Forecast radar and rain/snow accumulations up to 24 hours and radar-estimated rain totals are among the excellent features provided by Storm Hunter.
Moreover, Storm Hunter app users can enjoy live streaming of severe weather events from the Storm Hunter Ford Escape chase vehicle via the Iowa Storm Chasing Network. The app also offers live radar analysis on significant tornado days.
